Triple pelvic osteotomy is a procedure performed in young dogs with loose (lax) and painful hips (a manifestation of hip dysplasia). The hip is a ball and socket type of joint. The ball is called the head of the femur and the socket is the acetabulum. The treatment changes the angle of the acetabulum (socket) to improve the coverage of the head (ball) of the femur. This diminishes the discomfort and in the proper patient has a very good result. For best results, patients selected for this treatment should have no arthritic or minimal arthritic changes in the hip joint prior to surgery. If too many arthritic changes are present then a total hip replacement is recommended.
